Wallybird Notice re: Luncheon on 17 Jan

Curt and Paul would like to revisit our Wallybird Luncheon of January 17th.

It turned out to be something of a double-edged sword.

We usually sit with crossed fingers while hoping to get the required minimum of twenty.

Our contract requires that minimum which we pay for whether or not we collect from twenty.

This one was amazing!  We guess the word that Frank Mayne was to be our speaker and Bruce Cowee was to update his progress with Volume 4 of “Vietnam To Western Airlines” stirred considerable interest.

We are required to declare the number expected to attend by the previous Monday.

We had forty positive replies!  Please understand that the chef has to prepare for that expected number and so the guarantee is raised.  In this case they raised it to thirty-five.

We had eleven no shows, five walk-ins, and finished with thirty-two paying customers. And so our kitty, which was inherited from Dick Deeds, took a bit of a hit.

We recognize that sickness and serious family matters are valid excuses, especially when we are told ahead of time and we certainly don’t expect someone to pay for an event they were unable to attend.

However there were 3 or 4 from whom we never heard.

So here’s the bottom line:  Let your conscience be your guide.   If you had a good excuse and you let us know forget this matter and we hope to see you in April.   Otherwise you can send a check to Curt Taylor at:

35 Grove Drive, Portola Valley, CA 94028

We are working with Fairview Metropolitan to reduce the cost per person (and not by serving sub-standard beef!). We are waiting for their response, and when we get it, we will put out a very informal survey that will be meant only for those who attend the Wallybird luncheon in Oakland.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact us:

Paul: pjbro5790@att.net

Keep your nose up in the turns!

Bill Plaskett

I have been informed by the son of Western Air Line Captain Bill Plaskett, his dad “Went West” October 23, 2018 at the age of 91. Captain Plaskett’s son will be providing a tribute to his father to be posted for his Western Airline fellow pilots. No other details are available at this time. When I receive his tribute, it will be posted.

Joe Hagan’s wife

Dick, I appreciate the opportunity to announce Janice’s passing. Before the merger, she was a supervisor at the SLC hub coordinating office (HCO).
The link for her obituary is: www.metcalfmortuary.com
When the page is opened, there is a link “Photo Gallery” which includes her Frontier Airlines Stewardess graduation photo from 1959. Thanks for your support – it’s much appreciated.
Joe

Passsing of Marti Stevenson, wife of Don Stevenson

>> We wanted to let you know, Martie Stevenson passed away on October 11, 2018 in La Quinta, CA surrounded by her loving family. As many of you know, Martie had MSA (Multiple System Atrophy). This disease is related to Parkinson’s but the symptoms present themselves differently. She put up a valiant effort and remained strong up to the very end.
>>
>> As an organ donor, Mom always supported learning and research. In honoring her beliefs, we are deeply comforted with the decision to donate her brain to science through Cure PSP. We also ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to CurePSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). Cure PSP, https://www.psp.org/iwanttohelp/ways-to-give/ is a research program in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic that provides much needed research, awareness, education, care, and hopefully a cure for prime of life brain diseases such as MSA, Parkinson’s and ALS.
>>
>> Many have asked about service details, per her wishes, there will be no services. We will honor her in other ways. Thank you for being such great friends to our parents over the years. The three of us have experienced firsthand the love and friendships you had and heard many stories of the fun adventures our parents experienced with many of you.
